Night Phases. Flood.

This short film was my graduation project for my Bachelor's degree at New Bulgarian University.

Goal

The short film “Night phases. Flood.” is a project produced by me and the director Maria Gateva.

Our goal with this film was to present three key human reactions responding to the news of an upcoming flood, that
is presented in the film.

The reactions that are presented are calmness, fear, and disregard.

The story presented in the film isn’t strictly composed in the structure of the three key segments: beginning, middle, end. However, in my opinion, there is a clear feeling of opening and closing of the motion.

As the editor of this film, I used the Adobe Premiere Pro software. Editor-wise the film has different tempos during the storytelling. There are long one
-shots and shots of details with a slow-motion effect. The basic compositions of the shots are close-up, detail, and full shot.

Inspiration

The colors and the lighting of the shots in our film were inspired by the work of the English photographer – Toby Harvard.

His style is focused on combining unusual pair of colors and spot-on lighting on the character’s face. In
our film, we used these techniques to separate each heroine with a specific pair of colors. This helps the viewers to separate visually the stories and moods of each character from the others.

Using visuals and sound effects, I wanted to emphasize different moments and moods from the story. The final goal of my work as an editor of this film is to combine the three points of view in one unusual and interesting sequence.
